The Translation Scene in Latvia (Latvian SSR) during the Stalinist Years

2018

[full article, abstract in English; abstract in Lithuanian] In this paper the author continues to explore the translation scene in 20th century Latvia (Veisbergs 2016a). The period under discussion covers 1945–1953, the years of Stalin’s rule after WWII until his death in 1953. The translation situation is described by discussing nationalisation and centralisation of publishers, book liquidation, censorship, ideologisation and politicisation, russification, Latvian émigré translations and other aspects of importance in an attempt to present the translation scene of the period from different angles. At the end of the article an extensive list of references is provided that can serve as an in…

Szukając wolności: Sprawa kapitana m/s "Batory" Jana Ćwiklińskiego

2014

After WWII the Polish ocean liner “Batory” operated on the route Gdynia–New York, and from 1951 to India. The captain of the ship was Jan Ćwikliński. The Ministry for Public Security accused him of having a hostile attitude towards the People’s Republic of Poland and insisted on him being removed from his position as Batory captain. In the spring of 1953 the ship underwent a technical check-up at a shipyard in Great Britain. In the mean-time it was rumoured that the captain was to be arrested upon his return to Poland on suspicion of espionage. When the renovation works were about to be completed, Ćwikliński decided to escape and left his ship for good. The captain was given political asylu…

A novel alpha-amylase-lipase formulation as anti-staling agent in durum wheat bread

2016

The aim of this work has been to evaluate the anti-staling effect exerted by a novel α-amylase-lipase enzyme formulation on durum wheat bread, in comparison with four different commercial amylase preparations and with control without added enzymes. Bread-making trials were carried out at industrial level. Sliced bread, packed under modified atmosphere, was analyzed for texture profile, moisture content, and water activity during 90 days. Crumb sections were submitted to environmental scanning electron microscopy at the end of the storage period. The α-amylase-lipase enzyme preparation showed synergistic interactions in preventing staling. In particular, bread added of these two enzymes in m…

Polityka regionalna państwa po październiku 1956 r. na Śląsku Opolskim wobec regionalizmu

2017

The article is a continuation of considerations on the functioning of Polish regionalism in Silesia in the period of Polish People’s Republic, that is in a totalitarian State, after the end of Stalinism. The state authorities in Warsaw came to face the ąuestion how to halt the autochthonic population’s rapid willingness to emigrate to the FRG, which was fueled by the action of ”joining families”. Corrections introduced into the social policy were not of much help in this respect, since the deepening differences in the ąuality of life and the encouraging attitude represented by the authorities in Bonn, ready to accept repatriates and refugees, aided by practically stagnant economy and ”crude…
